Pikes Peak rookie scoops unlimited class win with SR8.
During his first attempt at the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Dominic Dobson scored an incredible win in the Unlimited Class and eighth place overall in a near-standard Radical SR8.

While having raced in many different forms of motorsports in his career, including the Indy 500, Le-Mans 24hr, Daytona 24hr, Sebring 12hr, Baja 1000, Goodwood Festival of Speed, as well as NASCAR and Touring Car events, Dobson had never contested the fabled 12.42-mile 'Race to the Clouds'.

Now in its 99th year the course features 156 turns with an elevation change of over 2,860m to reach the summit at 4,300m above sea level.

“I’m thrilled that I was able to be here and can’t thank George [Scott] at GoProMotorsports.com for allowing me to use his [Radical SR8] as well as our sponsors Sport Clips and TriArc Electric Supply,” stated seven time Indy 500 competitor Dobson when asked about the week.

“An Unlimited Class win and Rookie of the Year is far more than we could have hoped for - the team, headed by my long-time friend Steven Costello, did an excellent job on the car and making this all happen.”

The SR8 featured some small modifications to suit the unique challenges and regulations of the event - most notably the PPIHC-spec rollcage and seat, but was otherwise as it left the factory.

Radical Sportscars UK, along with Nevada dealer Radical West, as well as Jeff Shafer and Simon Shepard of Radical Ventures/One Motorsports all participated in readying the car for competition.

“We never expected to do this well, this is an operation that was put together in a couple of months,” added car owner George Scott when asked about the victory. “We would have been happy with just finishing, Dominic exceeded our expectations and we couldn’t be happier.”

In overcoming this year’s extremely challenging weather, with snow falling on the highest parts of the course, Dobson achieved a time of 10:15.289, to place eighth outright, win the Unlimited class by over five seconds and record the fastest Rookie time by six seconds.

It is the second year in a row that a Radical has won at Pikes Peak, following the success of Don Hoffman’s Radical RXC in the Exhibition Class last year.
